Married couple, Russell and Lauryn Mark, who are both on the Australian team for the London 2012 Olympics have claimed that they are being discriminated against over gay couples because they were told they couldn’t share a room in the Olympic Village.
From Daily Telegraph.
Australian shooter Russell Mark says he has been prevented from rooming with wife Lauryn while gay couples will share beds at this month's Olympics.
Russell and Lauryn said they were last night officially notified by Australian chef de mission Nick Green that they would be prevented from rooming together.
The decision is believed to have come from Shooting Australia, but Russell believes his pro-sleeping pill stance and wife Lauryn's Zoo magazine photo shoot have angered Olympic officials.
They were told they would have to leave the village and rent a hotel to stay together, but both will instead stay in the village and compete.
Lauryn's Zoo photo shoot, in which she totes her shotgun while in a green and gold bikini will be released this morning ahead of the couple's 3pm flight to London.
But Mark says there is a clear double standard given many gay sportspeople on elite teams are in relationships but a heterosexual couple cannot room together.
"The stupid part of this, which I have argued to them, is that there are tons of gay couples on the Olympic team who will be rooming together so we are being discriminated against because we are heterosexual," he said.Well obvious being an Olympic shooter, Russell Mark can shoot straight but what is not known is if he can think straight....
