I was always considered the 'pick up bait' as in others would ask me to go out knowing I was the one rejected and they would be picked up as to 'save' them from me and I learned to be the one to drive so I wouldn't get stranded. Then what was so polite is the person that picked them up would come up to me later on and tell me what 'fun' or how good they were not realizing that I was the one 'saved' from as finding out they are moving in together. 'Date' is now used to define when moving in together.
