Queens Boy Aces It at New York City Council With Gay Marriage Speech

Queens fifth grader Kameron Slade who was initially prohibited from delivering his pro-gay marriage speech at his school because the school considered the subject to be "inappropriate", has redelivered his speech in style at the New York City Council Wednesday.

At the invitation of Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who recently married her longtime partner Kim Catullo, the 10-year-old told council members, "I think adults must realize that as children get older, they become aware of these mature issues that are going on in the world. If children read or watch the news, they can also learn about things like same-gender marriage, so what’s the point in trying to hide it?"

The New York Times reports that when Slade's speech concluded, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, a Democrat, told him, “I’m getting married on Saturday, in three days, to my partner of 13 and a half years. When I saw you on TV, I thought you were the most courageous and wonderful young man I’ve ever seen.”
