Happy 50th Birthday John Stamos!!!

John Stamos (who turned 50 today), is best known for his role as Uncle Jesse on Full House, and he’s starring once again in a series about an unconventional yet perfectly normal family.

Full House was an American sitcom about three men in San Francisco raising three young girls. This scenario in the 1990’s was uncommon and the ABC program brought to light the struggles of a widowed parent and the new meaning of “family.” Similarly, Stamos’ recent role in the NBC sitcom The New Normal, which won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Comedy, tells the story of another atypical and loving family.

The New Normal, which ran for one season from September 2012 to April 2013, is about a wealthy same-sex couple, Bryan and David, who live in L.A. and have decided they want to have a child. On the other side of the country, Goldie Clemmons walks in on her husband cheating, packs up, and takes her nine-year-old daughter Shania on a road-trip to Los Angeles. Goldie meets Bryan and David and decides to become the surrogate for the couple’s child to help pay her way through law school.

“The new normal” means that a previously unfamiliar or atypical situation has become standard or expected, and this television show has brought attention to the acceptance and growing recognition of same-sex marriages in America. A topic once criticized and hotly debated is now becoming mainstream, as 13 states in the U.S. have declared same-sex marriage legal. Although the couple still feel rejection from homophobic and small-minded people (who are represented by Goldie’s grandmother Jane in the show), Goldie insists that “A family is a family, and love is love.”

In The New Normal, Stamos guest stars as Brice, a real estate agent who garners the attention of his coworker Jane. His sexuality is questioned by Jane, who assumes he is gay. He appears on the show in five episodes.

Unfortunately, NBC has axed a lot of their programs including The New Normal, Happy Endings, Smash, Partners, Go On, all which have gay or lesbian characters. The New Normal ended the series with a heartwarming episode where Sawyer, the new son of Bryan and David, is born.
